Responsive Classroom

​

​These programs focus on the social and emotional lives of children. These programs build cooperation, responsibility, empathy, and self control. Students excel when they feel that they are active participants in the learning process.  

Everyday Math

​

​Everyday Math focuses on developing children's understandings and skills in ways that produce life-long mathematical power. The program uses concrete, real-life examples that are meaningful and memorable and use of multiple methods and problem solving strategies to accommodate different learning styles. There is frequent practice of basic computational skills to build mastery.

Open Court Reading/Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop

​EVCS uses a balanced literacy approach with direct instruction in phonics that helps all children achieve. EVCS uses Open Court in conjunction with other programs.  EVCS also believes in the importance of writing and has students learn writing skills as a process, from gathering ideas through revising, proofreading and publishing.

Special Education/ English Language Learners

​

​EVCS has stong programs and supports for students with special education needs, including an embedded special ed teacher at each grade level, OT, PT and speech services in the least restrictive environment. EVCS has a dedicated ELL staff and uses interpreters for families who speak languages other than English.  

Community Service

​

​All classes at EVCS have a community service partner.  EVCS students learn that they are a part of many communities and can enrich them through active participation.  Partnerships have included Meals on Wheels, AIDS Community Services, People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH) Friends of the Night People, SPCA, and many more.

Special Area Subjects

​

​All EVCS 1 and 2 students will have art, music, dance, physical education, Library/technology, and Spanish each week. EVCS also believes in the importance of recess and access to the outdoors.
